Join 2024 Wisconsin Hazelnut Week!
Hazelnuts are an emerging new crop for the Upper Midwest with significant economic and environmental benefits. Through research, industry development, and outreach education we are working to realize the vision of our early-adopter growers: to create a sustainable hazelnut industry modeled after the oak savanna and based on our native American hazelnut.
The Savanna Institute’s North Farm will be hosting the fifth event of the series on Friday, August 23. North Farm is home to the very first Hazelnut Go-First Farm planted with the top genetics from the UMHDI and Grimo breeding programs. Now in it’s third year, this is your chance to see at-scale commercial production using alley-cropping. We’ll tour the plantings, see the equipment used to establish and maintain the planting, and we’ll see harvesting and de-husking equipment. Attendees will also learn about SI’s technical service program and the cost-share opportunities through the Expanding Agroforestry Program (EAP). This event is intended for growers interested in commercial scale hazelnut production with a focus on mechanization and scaling.
