Farm Intern (Illinois)

Deadline: February 17th, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will work to advance agroforestry by supporting the establishment and management of three Demonstration Farms across Illinois featuring novel tree crop varieties in integrated systems. Farms include:

  • 17 acres near Hanna City, IL - agroforestry using native and perennial crops
  • 45 acres near Monticello, IL - alley cropping of conventional row crops between nut & timber trees
  • 26 acres near Oregon, IL - silvopasture, riparian buffers, and windbreaks

This position will work closely with the IL Demonstration Farm Manager, other Savanna Institute staff members, community partners, and Demonstration Farm visitors.

Director of Partnerships

Deadline: March 2nd, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will lead the Savanna Institute’s efforts to develop models for commercializing, funding, and scaling up the role of agroforestry in the agricultural sector and as a natural climate solution. This position will work closely with the Farm Partnership Broker, Business Analyst, and Co-Executive Directors.

Business Analyst

Deadline: March 2nd, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will work with the Savanna Institute’s team developing models for commercializing, funding, and scaling up the role of agroforestry in the agricultural sector and as a natural climate solution. This position will work closely with the Director of Partnerships, Farm Partnership Broker, and Co-Executive Directors.

Farm Partnership Broker

Deadline: March 2nd, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will work with the Savanna Institute’s team developing models for commercializing, funding, and scaling up the role of agroforestry in the agricultural sector and as a natural climate solution. This position will work closely with the Director of Partnerships, Business Analyst, and Co-Executive Directors.

Event Coordinator & Support Specialist

Deadline: February 17th, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will work to advance agroforestry by developing and coordinating all Savanna Institute events and providing administrative support to the Institute’s leadership. This position will work closely with the Associate Director, Co-Executive Directors, and the SI education and outreach team. This is a high-intensity position with lots of potential for growth.

Tree Crop Germplasm Specialist

Deadline: March 2nd, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will work to advance the Savanna Institute’s expanding tree crop development program. This position will work closely with the Tree Crop Breeder, Hazelnut Commercialization Lead, Chestnut Commercialization Lead, and Elderberry Commercialization Lead.

Elderberry Commercialization Lead

Deadline: March 2nd, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will work to advance agroforestry and tree crops by stewarding the scale-up of the Midwest elderberry industry. This position will work closely with the Tree Crop Breeder, Hazelnut Commercialization Lead, Chestnut Commercialization Lead, and Tree Crop Germplasm Specialist.

Tree Crop Breeder

Deadline: March 2nd, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will spearhead the Savanna Institute’s expanding tree crop development program. This position will work closely with the Tree Crop Germplasm Specialist, Hazelnut Commercialization Lead, Chestnut Commercialization Lead, Elderberry Commercialization Lead, and the Co-Executive Directors.

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Carbon Sequestration & Biogeochemistry

Deadline: February 17th, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will contribute to the study of land-use transitions to agroforestry and perennial agroecosystems. Strong skills in field experimentation and data collection are required. Examples of projects include:

  • Setting up and maintaining an eddy covariance system in a hazelnut agroforestry system
  • Taking baseline soil samples to serve as a foundation for a long-term agroecological experiment
  • Measuring biogeochemical fluxes, including N leaching, N2O emissions, and soil respiration
  • Establishing data collection protocols for long-term field experiments

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Landscape Analysis & Land Use Planning

Deadline: February 17th, 2020 (11:59pm CT)

This position will contribute to the study of transitions in land-use to agroforestry and perennial agroecosystems. Strong skills in spatial analysis and statistical modeling are required, and experience in developing alternative land use scenarios is preferred. Examples of projects include:

  • Suitability mapping of the region for specific tree crops and land-use practices
  • Comparing economic outcomes of alternative land-use scenarios
  • Developing future land-use scenarios and their implications for ecosystem functions
  • Predicting implications of climate change on land-use and species composition
  • Conducting spatial analyses utilizing the SSURGO soils database and gridded climate data
